A data communications system has five components (see Figure 1.1).

1. Message. is the information (data) to be communicated. E.g. text, numbers, pictures, audio, and video.
2. Sender. is the device that sends the data message. It can be a computer, workstation, telephone handset, video camera, and so on.
3. Receiver. is the device that receives the message. It can be a computer, workstation, telephone handset, television, and so on.
4. Transmission medium. is the physical path by which a message travels from sender to receiver. E.g. twisted-pair wire, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, and radio waves.
5. Protocol. is a set of rules that govern data communications. It represents an agreement between the communicating devices. Without a protocol, two devices may be connected but not communicating.

2.1.2 Principles of Protocol Layering
The first principle dictates that if we want bidirectional communication, we need to make each layer so that it is able to perform two opposite tasks, one in each direction. E.g The second layer needs to be able to encrypt and decrypt. The first layer needs to send and receive mail.

The second principle that we need to follow in protocol layering is that the two objects under each layer at both sites should be identical. E.g. For example, the object under layer 3 at both sites should be a plaintext letter.

3.6.3 Latency (Delay) تعداد ثلاث انواع
The latency or delay defines how long it takes for an entire message to completely arrive at the destination from the time the first bit is sent out from the source. We can say that latency is made of four components: propagation time, transmission time, queuing time and processing delay.
Propagation time measures the time required for a bit to travel from the source to the destination.

The propagation speed of electromagnetic signals depends on the medium and on the frequency of the signal.
Transmission time of a message depends on the size of the message and the bandwidth of the channel.

Queuing time, the time needed for each intermediate or end device to hold the message before it can be processed. It is not a fixed factor; it changes with the load imposed on the network.

لماذا الاشاره لا تتداخل مع اشارات الجيران
Infrared waves, with frequencies from 300 GHz to 400 THz can be used for short-range communication.
Infrared waves, having high frequencies, cannot penetrate walls this prevents interference between one system and another, but this makes infrared signals useless for long-range communication.
Also, we cannot use infrared waves outside a building because the sun’s rays contain infrared waves that can interfere with the communication.
